Keeping your implants clean is the most important way to keep your dental implants for as long as possible. A routine of brushing, flossing and rinsing is the best way to maintain your new dental implants. Poor hygiene can lead to bacteria building up around your teeth and gums. This plaque bacterium can lead to periodontal disease which will eventually weaken the gum area and cause your implants to come loose and in extreme cases fall out.
Losing your dental implants can be completely avoided by using the correct dental hygiene products to help you keep your implants as clean as possible. Brushing and flossing are basic dental hygiene steps that you can employ but are you aware that there are products on the market which can help take your brushing and flossing routine even further.
One such product is the Sensodyne Interdens range of interproximal brushes. Interproximal brushes or ‘Proxy brushes’ as they are sometimes called are specially designed to help you keep the area in between your teeth and implants exceptionally clean. They are specifically designed to remove plaque effectively from hard to reach areas including interdental spaces, periodontal pockets, bridgework and orthodontic appliances.
The Sensodyne range of interproximal toothbrushes are excellent for dental implant cleaning as they come in 2mm and 3mm sizes. including a range with travel caps. Perfect for keeping your dental implants clean whilst on the go.
Flossing regularly is also another important way to keep the area between your teeth and dental implants fresh and clean. Many people find it difficult to floss daily especially the areas which are more hard to reach. Dentek floss threaders are a great way of reaching in between implants, and under bridges and bars. These floss threaders are essentially a nylon needle with a very large eye. The floss is placed through the eye. The needle end of the threader is then pushes through the teeth and removed leaving the thread behind. The thread is now placed securely in between the hard to reach areas which can now be cleaned.
Brushing your teeth 2-3 times daily and flossing just once a night is your first step towards keeping your dental implants for the rest of your life.

You have to be careful when using proxy brushes. The metal core of the brush can scratch the implant surface. This will allow more bacteria and debris to settle on the implant and be impossible to clean.
